As I develop my story on abortion in the United States, I’m focusing on the gap between public perception and the complex reality those seeking abortion care face. Many people view abortion as either a simple medical choice or something shameful, but the truth is much more nuanced. I aim to explore how stigma impacts access to care and influences conversations around abortion, particularly within communities like SDSU. Public narratives often overlook the profound personal experiences that shape these decisions.
For my reporting, I plan to conduct interviews with students, health experts, and organizations like Planned Parenthood to present a balanced perspective on the topic. I also want to incorporate digital media elements, such as video clips or graphics, to make key statistics and personal stories more accessible. My goal is to approach this sensitive issue with empathy and thoughtfulness, ensuring that the voices of those affected are heard and understood.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been exploring the gap between abortion stigma and the reality of young people's experiences with reproductive health. My conversations with SDSU students and campus advocates have revealed the many misunderstandings that persist around this topic. It’s fascinating to see how social media and peer discussions influence their beliefs, while the emotional complexity of individual choices remains heavily felt. These interviews have underscored the need to approach the subject with empathy and sensitivity, especially since stigma often silences open discussion. Fostering understanding and dialogue is essential to breaking down barriers and creating a more supportive environment for everyone involved.
I’ve had the chance to hear from both students and someone who works specifically in helping those with abortion/pregnancy. Through these conversations, I've discovered just how powerful digital storytelling can be in changing the way people think about important issues. This project has been an eye-opener for me, as I've used everything from interviews to creative elements like audio clips and infographics. It’s been rewarding to see how reporting can connect with advocacy in such a personal way. I aim to bring authentic voices to the forefront, helping to shift the conversation around abortion from a divisive topic to one that’s understood as an essential part of healthcare. I believe that by sharing these experiences, we can create more understanding and acceptance.
